Back in 2006, then President George W. Bush awarded the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops a five-year contract worth $19 million so that they could help victims of human trafficking. However, in 2009 the ACLU sued the government when they learned that the USCCB was refusing to refer victims to those agencies that could provide contraceptive or abortion services. As a result, the Department of Health and Human Services opted in late September to revoke the organization's funding and instead direct it to other, more cooperative groups.
This in turn has led to increased tension between the Obama administration and the Catholic community. Already upset at the administration's refusal to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, the USCCB is now threatening legal action on the grounds of "anti-Catholic bias" from the government.
Mind you, according to the USCCG, any legislation that defies their beliefs constitutes bias, including the the repeal of DOMA, the acceptance of same-sex marriage and the promotion of contraceptives. Perhaps they may want to take a moment sometime to look in the mirror and think about who is really perpetuating bias, what with the fact that they blatantly oppose any policy that recognizes those three principles defining out nation: "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
